The authorities also intercepted 13 other unauthorised hikers during recent monitoring operations. The TNBTS Head urged the public not to use illegal climbing routes

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister called for strategic cooperation with Russia to develop nuclear energy technology, including a floating nuclear power plants (NPPs) as part of efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency within the next three years. Indonesia will collaborate with the Russian nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, for this. He also added that Russia could play an important role in supporting supply chains since the country is a major producer of energy, wheat, and fertiliser. Indonesia will import 150 million barrels of crude oil from Russia in phases in 2026

Indonesia has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for 2026-2030 during the 11th General Assembly

The Energy Minister stated that Indonesia is on track to launch its B50 biodiesel mandate, blending 50% palm oil-based biodiesel with 50% conventional diesel, on 1 Jul. The ministry’s tests showed a positive result, and he added Indonesia will reduce or even stop diesel imports, especially cetane 48 gasoil. Biodiesel mandate of B40 in H1 2026 and B50 in H2 2026 is estimated to save Indonesia around 157.28 trillion IDR in import costs

The Central Bank has increased its benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points on 18 Jun, increasing the seven-day reverse repurchase rate to 5.75%, the highest level since May 2025. The bank also increased its overnight deposit facility rate and lending facility rates by the same amount ‌to 4.75% and 6.50%

The Tourism Minister said the Tourism Village Network (JADESTA) recorded 6,262 villages in 2026, +1.85% YoY. Tourist visits and trips to the 50 tourism villages which received the 2024 Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) increased to 2.3 million in 2025, +44.81% YoY. Tourism revenue at the 50 villages increased to 59.60 billion IDR in 2025, +29.41% YoY, following a +19.67% YoY increase in 2024

A Member of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives criticised the Tourism Ministry's request for an additional 1.99 trillion IDR budget for 2027, as it is almost 200% above the 1.01 trillion IDR indicative ceiling. He also criticised the ministry’s approach to comparing budget needs with the tourism sector’s foreign exchange earnings

Indonesia will introduce a transport fare stimulus package for the school holiday period (Jun-Jul 2026) and the Christmas and New Year holidays. The package includes discounts of up to 30% on land and sea transport, a 100% waiver of port fees, and 100% VAT incentives for domestic economy-class airfares. The government will allocate 190.5 billion IDR for land and sea transport discounts during the school holiday, as well as a 472.7 billion IDR budget for VAT incentives for domestic economy-class air tickets. 61.4 billion has been allocated for the Christmas and New Year period, along with 722 billion IDR for VAT incentives for flights

Indonesia targets 19.1 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2027. The Tourism Minister said the country is “committed to maximising all available resources to ensure that tourism contributes more significantly to the national economy, generates employment, boosts foreign exchange earnings, and enhances public welfare”. Average Spending per Arrival (ASPA) is expected to reach $1,447-1,497 USD, +5.5%-6.6% YoY. The rise in international tourist arrivals is projected to contribute $25.5-$28.6 billion USD in foreign exchange earnings, +16% YoY. Domestic tourist trips are targeted at 1.28 billion, +8.5% YoY. The tourism sector is expected to employ 27.33 million workers, +3% YoY. Tourism's contribution to GDP is targeted at 4.7%-4.8%, +0.4 percentage points. Investments in the tourism sector are projected to reach 71 trillion IDR, up 11.8% YoY in 2027. Indonesia targets 16-17.6 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2026. The country's economy is projected to grow by 5.8%-6.5%, while tourism-related sectors such as accommodation and F&B are expected to expand by 8.7%-9.3%

According to the Tourism Minister, 25,344 tour guides across Indonesia have received competency certificates, improving service quality and tourism safety. She added that the number of search and rescue (SAR) operations increased from 229 cases in 2025, vs 181 cases in 2024, while from 1 Jan-14 Jun 2026, Indonesia recorded 111 cases. There were 311 casualties in 2024, 384 in 2025, and 139 from 1 Jan-14 Jun 2026. The Tourism Ministry has conducted 10 competency-based training initiatives across 5 locations, for 700 participants, and 23 competency certification programs in 20 locations for 1,150 participants

Travel Meet Asia 2026 will be held from 23-24 Jun 2026, with over 100 exhibitors, a 20% increase in exhibition space compared to the 2025 edition. Messe Berlin Asia Pacific will host the event with the support of ITB Asia in partnership with the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA). Over 400 buyers, 40 speakers, and 1,500 participants are expected to take part in the event

The Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals Association (ICPI) asked the government to map the shopping behaviour of tourists. ICPI Chairman said the tourists are looking for a personalised, local, and immersive experience. He pointed out that Malaysian tourists like to visit Tanah Abang or Thamrin City to buy clothes such as sarongs with motifs, while Singaporean visitors prefer to purchase monthly necessities in Batam. The Ministry of Environment and the Bali Government will launch a national pilot project for full waste segregation in Bali starting from 1 Jul 2026, across households, village communities, markets, hotels, and offices. The next phase will involve ending open dumping across Indonesia by 1 Aug 2026. The ban on disposing of organic waste at landfills, which took effect on 1 Apr 2026, has reduced waste volumes in Denpasar and Bandung by 60% within weeks. Bali’s waste-sorting compliance has reached 87%, and more than 100,000 composters have been distributed by the local government

The deadly floods and landslides in Sumatra in 2025 have wiped out at least 7% of the total population, or at least 58, of the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan, based on a report by Borneo Futures, World Weather Attribution, and Liverpool John Moores University. The flood was previously reported to have killed 1,200 people and damaged around 300,000 homes. The environmental groups have blamed these damages on the rapid deforestation of Sumatra island

Pertamina has increased its fuel prices by 32.1% for Pertamax (RON 92), raising the price to 16,250 IDR per litre from 12,300 IDR per litre. The price of Pertamax Green (RON 95 blended with ethanol) has also increased by 31.8%, to 17,000 IDR per litre from 12,900 IDR per litre

Indonesia is expecting an increase in forest fire risks from the dry season in Aug, according to the Meteorological Agency. From Jan to 8 Jun 2026, the agency recorded about 1,700 hotspots, a sharp increase YoY. Bank Indonesia (BI) has increased interest rates by 25 basis points on 9 Jun to 5.5% to stabilise the IDR as the currency continues to reach record lows. IDR strengthened to 18,075 IDR per USD after this announcement, a day after it dropped to a record low of 18,190 IDR per USD. The IDR experienced its lowest and steepest drop since 2020 in the past 3 weeks

Singapore and Indonesia will conduct a joint study on the technology sector in the Batam, Bintan and Karimun (BBK) region to identify future opportunities and to transform the region into a “vibrant digital hub”. The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) supports the Tourism Ministry’s move to regulate foreign online travel agent (OTA) platforms that do not have offices in Indonesia and illegal accommodation in the country. The General Chair of the Indonesian Travel Agent Association (ASTINDO) agreed with this and added that this policy can help to attract more quality foreign tourists

The Jakarta Government Car Free Day (CFD), implemented once a week, has been effective in helping reduce vehicle emissions while lowering air pollution levels in Jakarta city. The Ministry of Tourism is proposing a visa-free scheme for 8 countries, including: Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Macau and Permanent Residents of Singapore. As of 27 May, 1,444 international flights had been cancelled to Indonesia due to the Middle East conflict, losing 160,052 international tourists

Bali’s Governor has underlined the islands’ initiatives to address waste and congestion, with a waste-to-energy plant completed by late 2027, and an aim to be trash-free by 2028. He noted that tourism provides 66% of Bali’s economy, and that in Jan-May 2026, hotel and restaurant tax revenue reached 2.89 trillion IDR. Grab Indonesia CEO denied they are exiting the Indonesian market, and said they are committed to supporting the digital economy of Indonesia and will align their business operations with government policy. Recently, Indonesia announced a cap on commissions charged on app-connected on-demand motorcycle riders to 8% from the 20% previously charged. She added Grab accounts for around 50% of Indonesia’s ride-hailing and online delivery industry, and helped to create an estimated 4.6 million economic opportunities through the digitalisation of MSMEs. Gran has allocated 100 billion IDR under its “Grab untuk Indonesia” program to support driver-partners. Grab Chief Financial Officer said that they will look into the fare structure and the business model for bikes, as the cap on commissions is huge

Indonesia welcomed 1.25 million international arrivals in Apr, +7.22% YoY and +14.75% MoM, the highest since 2020 according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS). Overall from Jan-Apr 2026, Indonesia welcomed 4.68 million international visitors, +8.24% YoY. Malaysia is the largest source of visitors in Apr, accounting for 16.65% of total arrivals, Australia at 12.65%, and China at 10.73%. BPS attributed seasonal factors, such as holiday periods in Australia and France, to the increase in international arrivals. Bali Airport and Jakarta Airport accounted for nearly 88% of all international arrivals via air. However, domestic tourist trips dropped to 97.55 million in Apr, -24.14% YoY and -22.79% MoM. This is due to the Eid al-Fitr holiday falling in late Mar 2026 and early Apr 2026, boosting travel activity in Mar. West Java, East Java, and Central Java remain the largest source of domestic travellers, but posted a double-digit drop compared to MoM. Eid al-Adha is expected to boost domestic travel; however, rising jet fuel prices have made domestic airfares expensive. Hotel occupancy of star-rated hotels increased by 1.85 percentage points YoY to 48.83%

Mount Rinjani National Park Office in West Nusa Tenggara advised tourists and hikers to prepare for colder temperatures during mountain activities as the region enters dry season

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism will work with the Indonesian Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) to speed up halal certification of MSME products in 1,500 tourism villages. Through this collaboration, 31,548 halal certificates have been issued across 1,116 tourism villages in 34 provinces in Indonesia, according to the Tourism Minister. 123 entrepreneurs with 139 products have officially secured halal certification as of 30 May in Jatimulyo Tourism Village

Agoda’s survey found that Asian travellers are taking frequent and shorter trips, instead of a once-a-year holiday, giving rise to the “perpetual traveller”. In Indonesia, 32% of travellers plan to take 11 or more trips in 2026. Agoda also reported that 73% of Asian Gen Z travellers take 1 to 6 trips annually, and stay for not more than 7 days. Interest in secondary destinations across Asia has increased 15% faster than traditional tourism hubs over the past two years, including Japanese cities such as Takamatsu (+63%), Matsuyama (+44%), and Sendai (+32%). Hotels with advanced localisation report 59% stronger RevPAR impact, 95% of hotels said repeat bookings have increased, and 91% said the guests are willing to pay more per room

During the 2026 Eco Tourism Week – Wonderful Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Industry Forum (WI-STIF) in Bali, Indonesia’s Tourism Minister encouraged tourism businesses to adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to enhance competitiveness and support sustainable tourism transformation. She also highlighted the Clean Tourism Movement, which aims to raise awareness of cleanliness and sanitation at tourism destinations, in line with the Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful) Movement

Previously, the program was run 6 days a week - now it will run for 5 days. 2026 allocation for this program will be reduced from 335 trillion IDR to 268 trillion IDR, as part of the budget efficiency policy

The Tourism Minister urged gastronomic services to be improved to boost the tourism competitiveness of Indonesia. Recently, Indonesia received the New Destination Champion Award 2026 by La Liste in Paris, France. She added that local restaurants such as August in Jakarta and Locavore NXT in Bali are in this year’s list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants

The Chief Economist at Trimegah Sekuritas Indonesia warned that the IDR has entered an excessive depreciation phase and is weaker than “Indonesia’s actual economic capacity”. He also added that the IDR is shaped by economic fundamentals, global pressures, domestic policy direction, and uncertainty of Indonesia’s economic process. Coordinating Economy Minister stated that the government’s work-from-home policy managed to save subsidised gasoline (Pertalite) by almost 9% in Apr and May 2026. Following the savings, the government has decided to continue this policy, covering over 5 million civil servants in central and regional government offices. The program, which began on 1 Apr is now extended until the end of Jul. The measures also include rationing of subsidised fuel sales, cutting officials’ government vehicle use by half and their work travel budget by 50% for domestic trips and 70% for overseas trips. The Ministry of Tourism will initiate action against 1,600 unlicensed accommodations listed on Online Travel Agency (OTA) platforms if they fail to register by 1 Aug 2026

Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry and OTA partners have developed an API-based verification system to ensure all accommodations listed on OTA platforms hold a valid business licence. Operators will be required to provide a Business Identification Number (NIB), Indonesia Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI), and Business Activity Number (NKU), with the system targeted for launch by Jun 2027. The initiative aims to promote a fair and competitive tourism industry and support sustainable tourism growth. Since Mar 2025, the ministry, regional governments, and nine OTA partners have educated 1,500 operators on NIB registration. As of 20 May 2026, short-term accommodation businesses registered in the OSS system increased 46.5% compared to 31 Mar 2026, with villa accommodations recording the highest growth at 76.4%

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry will introduce a 5% bioethanol (E5) gasoline program in Jul, running alongside the E20 biodiesel mandate. The mandatory use of E5 bioethanol for public service obligation (PSO) purposes was initially planned to be launched in 2020, with E20 enforcement planned for 2025. The Ministry’s Renewables Director General stated the initial rollout will focus on regions next to domestic ethanol supply sources. She also highlighted the planned increase in palm oil content in the biodiesel mandate from B40 to B50. The Energy Minister has ordered all raw materials for the E5 program to be sourced domestically. The 2026 E5 rollout will begin in East Java, Jakarta, West Java, Banten, Central Java, and Yogyakarta initially before expanding to Bali in 2027. For the 2028-2030 period, E10 blending will be introduced
