The Visayas grid issued another yellow alert on 19 May due to high electricity demand and the shutdown of large coal-powered plants. This was the 7th yellow alert issued in the Visayas within 8 days, bringing the total to 9 in 2026. There was 3 red alerts in Visayas. The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines issued the alert when the power reserves are low. NGCP said the peak demand reached 2,594 megawatts, while the capacity is just around 2,691 MW

The Embassy of Angola in Manila informed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that Angola has announced tourist visa exemption for Filipinos up to 30 days per visit and a total of 90 days per year

The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) is increasing promotional activities to attract more foreign tourists. The top visitors to Cordillera are American tourists, followed by the French, Koreans, Canadians, Japanese, British, Chinese, Australians, Germans, and Israelis. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) stated that the government has repatriated 9,732 Filipinos, including 7,635 overseas Filipino workers (OFW), 1,736 of their dependents, and 361 tourists from the Middle East as of 17 May. The latest batch of 34 OFWs and 1 dependent returned from Qatar on 16 May. The DMW Secretary said this data does not include those who were stranded in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and other countries while waiting to transit to the UAE. The DMW expects more OFWs to be repatriated this week from Kuwait. DMW has been using funds from various sources, including the Aksyon Fund in 2025 (1.2 billion PHP), Aksyon Fund 2026 (2 billion PHP), the Emergency Repatriation Program (1.762 billion PHP), and Alagang Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (143 million PHP). DMW and OWWA requested an additional 22 billion PHP in Apr for the repatriation efforts of 2.4% of 2.4 million Filipinos in the region in the “worst case scenario”. OWWA has already used 55% of its 1.2 billion emergency funds under the 2026 General Appropriations Act

Matnog Town, Sorsogon, recorded 221,760 PHP in tourism revenue on 16 May, its highest single-day tourism revenue. The town mayor said they recorded 199 boat trips during the day with 1,765 tourists, including two foreign tourists. The town is popular for Subic Beach on Calintaan Island, and other activities such as island-hopping, snorkelling, and swimming activities

Cebu is looking to position itself as a hub for MICE Tourism and education tourism destinations. The Governor of Cebu raised the tourism priorities directly to the Tourism Secretary on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit. The President called for an emergency meeting of top officials following political tensions and a gunfire incident at the Senate. Senator Ronald dela Rosa, the former National Police Chief, is believed to be holding up at the Senate building over fears of arrest over a warrant by the International Criminal Court for his crimes involving drug enforcement under the former President Duterte. The Police said one person was arrested following the incident. Sara Duterte, the Vice President, is facing an impeachment trial in the Senate, which could affect her presidential campaign in 2028

The Mayors of Aklan Province and the Aklan chapter of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP-Aklan) urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to reconsider a bridge project which will connect Boracay to mainland Panay through Malay. The mayors pointed out Boracay’s 2018 rehabilitation, which outlines the importance of control in development, enforces environmental laws, and maintains the island’s carrying capacity. The bridge raised concerns over possible disruptions to coastal and marine ecosystems, including changes in water flow, impacts on coral reefs, and fish habitats. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported 2.58 million unemployed Filipinos, or 5% unemployment rate in Mar 2026, vs 5.1% in Feb 2026 and 3.9% in Mar 2025. The employment rate was 95% with 49.07 million employed Filipinos. The number of underemployment increased to 6.03 million in Mar, or a rate of 12.3%, higher than 11.8% in Feb 2026, but lower than 13.4% in Mar 2025

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported the inflation rate reached 7.2% in Apr, the highest since Mar 2023 at 7.6%. It exceeded the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) estimate of 5.6% to 6.4% inflation for Apr. The high inflation in Apr was driven by increases in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which increased 6% in Apr vs 2.9% in Mar. The transport costs also increased 21.4%. Inflation in Metro Manila is at 5.5%, and other areas posted 7.7%

Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DepDev) Secretary warned that due to the pressures from the Middle East crisis, the Philippines’ GDP in Q1 2026 is expected to be below 3% vs 5.4% in Q1 2025. Q4 2025 GDP growth expanded by 3%, the slowest since the contraction due to the pandemic in Q1 2021 and the weakest non-pandemic growth since 2011. An economist from the University of Asia and the Pacific expects full-year GDP growth to be at 4.2% in 2026
